No entry fees, minimal prizing, minimal support, minimal signage, maximum suffering.

Riding 100 kilometers of Squamish trail isn't everyone's cup of tea. Squamish trails are know for being burly and there's no shortage of hills to climb. Riding 100 kilometers here is a sufferfest, but some people like sufferfests. My buddy Dave loves sufferfests. If you're one of those people like Dave, then this ride is for you. 100 Reasons To Hate Yourself is a grassroots, underground, word of mouth 100km MTB ride/race through Squamish, starting at Bean Around the World for coffee and ending at Norman Rudy's pub for beers. By the end you'll be questioning why you ever thought riding 100km in Squamish might be a good idea and then loath yourself for joining in the "fun".

It's all about surviving until the end. There are some easy exit points if you need them, but we will haraass you if you take them.

Feel free to invite friends who hate themselves enough to do this.

The best rides are the ones where you bite off much more than you can chew, and live through it - Doug Bradbury

  Schedule

September 14th, 2019

There is no signup before the day of the ride. Just show up at the Bean, sign-in and you can ride. We're expecting people to finish in 8-12 hours. If you think it might take you longer, bring a headlamp. Last year we handed out map packages for people who might need an bit of a hand making their way around the trails. We'll probably do that again this year, but don't count on it. Study the route beforehand and know it by heart when you arrive. If you don't know it, ride with someone who does.

6:00am - 6:30am
Sign-in at Bean Brackendale

Grab a coffee and get ready for a big day of biking. You can also drop your bags here if you want them later in the course.

7:00am
☀️ Sunrise & Ride Start

The sun rises at 7:00am, and we'll roll out of the coffee shop at the same time. The first 10km of the ride we'll keep the group all together. After that you can break into whatever groups you'd like, or just pin it by yourself for the next 90km.

~7:30am
Warm Clothing Drop at the Alice Lake Turnoff 10km

At the end of the controlled start we have a warm clothing drop in case you wore way too many layers at the start of the ride.

8:30am - 10am
Water Station at the cul-de-sac at the end of Tantalus Rd 28km

Nice work making it this far, but the hard part hasn't even started yet.

12:00pm - 5:00pm
Water Station at the bottom of Half Nelson 80km

You're so close to being done. You should probably pound a coke and some oreos to give you that sugar rush that can take you to the finish line.

3:00pm - 6:59pm
Finish at Norman Rudy's Pub 100km

Time to replace all those calories that you burnt while riding your bike all day long. Grab yourself a beer and dig into some great food.

7:00pm
🌙 Sunset

Hopefully you're at the pub by now because it's going to start to get dark really quickly. Bring a headlamp if you think it may take your longer than 12 hours to finish.

Ride Information

Course Design

The course has been designed to be a loop that never uses the same trail/road/access twice and only crosses itself a few times due to climbing trails doing some zip zagging.

Support

There is little to no support during this ride. Yes, we have our aid stations, but don't rely on them for your life. Ride like you're on your own and you'll be ok.

Gear Drop

If you've dropped gear at one of the aid stations you'll be able to get it at Norman Rudy's at the end of the day. If you arrive super late and nobody is around phone 604-849-1341 and we'll arrange getting it back to you right away.

Controlled Race Start

There will be a controlled ride through the dump trails in Brackendale. This is the first 10km and is on fairly easy trails. This is to make sure everyone gets off to a good start and doesn't get lost right away in those damn confusing trails.

Download the Route

I do suggest downloading the route off RideWithGPS, or follow someone who knows the trails very well. You can also follow a route on the Strava app on your phone but you may run out of battery.

Words of Encouragement

Looking forward to seeing who shows up and even more to see who finishes! I think you can all do it. All of you are awesome. Really, I'm not just saying that. If all else fails, just keep pedaling.

Testimonials

Thanks for the great event! I really think this has the merit to be a yearly event that will attract some crazy people from all over.

Do you ever finish a ride and realize you left a pump or a water bottle on the trail somewhere? It was like that except I had left the entire substance of my being somewhere around the 70km mark.

Why do we do this to ourselves?

Not your parent's ride. Two jerks prey on our weakness. Century of hate
